RAGE is an artist collective with a fluid approach to membership. RAGE was established in 2016 by a group of international students who met while studying at the Royal College of Art. It was formed under artist Peter Kennard’s guidance. It explores the dynamics of online power relationships and the ways resistance movements now use the internet to counter restrictions such as hacktivist movements, revolutions organised through social media and the widespread use of memes. Inspired by the censorship method of oversaturation of information online, this new work is a 12 channel immersive film and sound installation. It is combined with 17 QR codes inviting the viewer to scan them onsite and transport them into a deeper experience, to reflect on the parallels between 1989 and today. In 2022, with the help of Covid-19, governments around the world can now justify the use of digital surveillance and Big Data beyond the pandemic as a means to protect national security, implement governance priorities, and serve future public health interests. The show is this group of emerging artists’ reaction to global issues ranging from populism, national identity, human rights, demagoguery, war and economic crisis. Shinyoung Park and Hyun Kim work are about corruption and internalized power in South Korea. Mark Langston, Eugenia Popesco, and Amy Cornfield respond to Brexit and class issues in the UK. Amy also tackles the complexities of heritage and the persistence of racism in South Africa. Francis Olvez-Wilshaw addresses economic collapse. Amale Khlat’s work reconstructs war memories through voices and images. Bonnie Wong emphasizes the ridiculousness of media. Paul Coombs presents a new flag for a ‘new’ America. Camila Mora Scheihing mirrors the past with the present. Tamara Kametani comments on the EU’s asylum policies. Rhine Bernardino focuses on the violence of the President of the Philippines’ war on drugs along with the horror of arbitrary value placement, abstraction, and disconnection that come with it. Bapor Tabo(o) set on a boat flowing and gliding through the locks, along the London canals, showcasing live performances by live artists, groups, contemporary dancers and movers, musical performances and spoken word. The boat’s façade is strewn with artworks flying in the form of flags, posters and banners by RAGE collective and artists whose works deal with political issues and concerns, serving as a stage for live works and performances to take place.
